All sorts of incredible things happen every day; sometimes they are things we can’t explain. People have witness cloud formations looking like angels, but in this incredible footage, it is birds that create a phenomenal image in the sky.
In the video, a murmuration of thousands of starlings take the shape of a giant bird in the sky.
Allegedly, the starlings made the formation to scare off attacking sparrowhawks. Guy Benson captured the mesmerizing footage as thousands of starlings flew over the Attenborough Nature Reserve in Nottingham on Christmas Day.
The starlings swirled around the sky, taking on different shapes as they flew. But this one particular shape is unmistakable and certainly not one you see every day. Guy Benson said of the unique moment:
I was with my wife Anita at dusk when a cloud of starlings appeared overhead. For about 20 minutes they were all dancing in the sky. At one moment the murmuration took the shape of a huge bird in the sky. It was a really unusual shape and I think it was because there were four Sparrowhawks who kept diving into the birds to try and pick them off. It was one of the greatest sights I’ve been able to see in nature.
20 years ago, you would have gotten 40,000 birds in a murmuration. However, these days you’re more likely to get between 10,000 and 20,000. There are still some locations that are hotspots for where you are likely to see them; one of which is in Attenborough.
While Guy Benson is a regular birdwatcher, this is the first time he has seen something so miraculous.
We come up all the time when the murmuration takes place, sometimes they just bed down in the reeds but this time we were really lucky. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, you feel like the birds are doing it just for you, it was mesmerizing
